The Four Motors for Europe share their experiences in the railway sector at Lombardy event “20 Anni di Linee S”

On December 13, 2024, Lombardy Presidency brought together representatives from the Four Motors for Europe in Milan, to celebrate the 20 years anniversary of the regional suburban railway service and hold a round table for an exchange of views and best practices in the railway sector.

In the framework of the Lombardy presidency of the Four Motors for Europe, institutional and technical actors from the partner regions of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia responded to the invitation of the Lombardy Region to participate in the celebration event “20 Years of the S-Lines: The Evolution of Mobility and the Future of Regional Transportation”, held in Palazzo Lombardia, on December 13, 2024.

With moderation by journalist Tiziana Ferrari, the conference focused on the establishment and evolution of the Suburban rail service connecting the city of Milan to its hinterland and offered a special opportunity to learn about the innovative projects and policies being developed in the Four Motors regions.

The event was opened by the institutional greetings of regional Minister for Transports and Sustainable Mobility, Franco Lucente, who described the achievements and current challenges of the S-Lines and Undersecretary for International and European Relations, Raffaele Cattaneo, who intervened as representative of the Four Motors for Europe, also in relation to the role played by physical infrastructures and connection routes in the economic and social growth of the Four Motors regions, a key topic of the Lombardy Presidency Program of the network.

Following speeches from experts and stakeholders of the Lombardy railway sector, the floor was given to the Four Motors representatives, to share their experiences and discuss the future of the railway sector in their regions:

  • Leander Matzek, from the Department 33 of the Ministry of Transport of Baden-Württemberg, presented the development of the railway hub Stuttgart 21 and the new opportunities for mobility with public transport;
  • Pere Macias, Commissioner for the Integral Transfer of Rodalies, explained the transformation of the Rodalies System in Catalonia;
  • Olivier Laurent, Director of Rail and Air Mobility of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, illustrated the project of SERM, the Service Express Régionaux Métropolitains;
  • finally, Silvio Landonio, Lombardy Director General of the DG for Transports and Sustainable Mobility, illustrated the outlook for the regional public transport system.
