Four Motors for Europe Young Farmers Dialogue: Consolidating Interregional Cooperation on Generational Renewal

Tarragona, 13 March 2026 - From 11 to 13 March 2026, the Government of Catalonia, under its presidency of the Four Motors for Europe (4ME), hosted the Young Farmers Dialogue in Tarragona. This landmark gathering brought together 26 young farmers from Catalonia, Lombardy, Baden-Württemberg, and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to address the critical challenge of generational renewal in European agriculture. Organized at the Port of Tarragona, the event combined institutional dialogue, field visits, and collaborative workshops to produce a joint call for action.

Position of the Four Motors for Europe on the EU Strategy for Generational Renewal in Agriculture

The Four Motors for Europe have adopted a joint position on the European Commission’s “Strategy for Generational Renewal in Agriculture”, presented on 21 October 2025. The Strategy sets out a roadmap to support young farmers and attract new generations to secure Europe’s food, agricultural and rural future, in a context where only 12% of European farmers are under 40 and many rural areas face depopulation and structural challenges.

The recent general assembly of AREPO (Association of European Regions for Products of Origin), held at the Institut d’Estudis Catalans in Barcelona on October 22 & 23, 2025, showcased the united support of the 4 Motors of Europe—Catalonia, Lombardy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, and Baden-Württemberg— in advancing the interests of quality agri-food products with designation of origin across Europe. These dynamic regions reaffirmed their commitment to AREPO’s mission of championing regional, traditional, and high-quality agricultural practices within EU policy frameworks.

Four Motors for Europe and Enrico Letta debate how cohesion and competitiveness can guide Europe’s future

The representatives of the Four Motors for Europe – Catalonia, Baden-Württemberg, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Lombardy – held a high-level debate with Enrico Letta, President of the Jacques Delors Institute and former Italian Prime Minister, on how cohesion and competitiveness can serve as Europe’s twin compass for the future. The discussion, moderated by Ester Borràs, Delegate of the Government of Catalonia to the EU, took place in Brussels during the European Week of Regions and Cities under the Catalan Presidency of the network.
